Moving to Canada from the UK
Last checked: October 2026
Moving to Canada from the UK is one of the clearest routes to living abroad for good, because Canada wants skilled workers. Most people move through Express Entry, a points-based system that leads to permanent residence. Here's how it works, who Canada is looking for, and what to check before you apply.
Moving to Canada from the UK: which path is right for you?

Trades
Electricians, plumbers, carpenters and welders are among the trades Canada needs most. Trades have their own Express Entry category, but most are certified by each province, so check how your UK qualification transfers.

Healthcare and Teaching
Nurses, doctors and teachers are wanted across Canada, and both healthcare and education have their own Express Entry categories. Both are regulated by each province, so you'll need to register there before you can work.

Professionals
Engineers, IT specialists and other professionals have strong options, with targeted draws for science, technology, engineering and maths jobs. You'll usually need your UK degree assessed, and engineers must register with the province to use the title.

Not sure where you fit?

Vancouver
Vancouver is known for its mix of mountains, ocean and city life, with strong jobs in tech, film and construction. It's also among the most expensive cities in Canada for housing.

Calgary
Calgary is in Alberta, with strong jobs in energy, construction and engineering, and the Rocky Mountains about an hour away. Housing is cheaper than in Toronto or Vancouver, and Alberta has no provincial sales tax, so day-to-day costs are lower too.

Ottawa
Ottawa is Canada's capital, with steady jobs in government and a growing tech sector. It's cheaper to live in than Toronto, but many government jobs ask for both English and French, and the winters are long and cold.
Toronto
Toronto is Canada's biggest city and its business capital, with the most jobs in finance, tech and construction. It's also one of the most expensive places to live in Canada, so check rents carefully before you commit.
